What is a CCP? A Critical Control Point is a point or step in a treatment process where control can be applied and a hazard prevented, eliminated, or reduced to an acceptable level. At each CCP you monitor a parameter against limits and act when those limits are approached.

Treatment steps

  • Objective — what the control point achieves.
  • Monitoring — parameter, analyser, location, who is responsible, and records.
  • Performance criteriatarget range, action limit and critical limit. Critical limits set by a rule are locked; the rest are editable.
  • Held-for duration — how long a limit must be exceeded before it applies, entered under each action and critical limit. Type a time (for example 2 min) or a proportion of run time (for example 5% of daily run time); the field suggests common values as you type.
  • Corrective actions — separate responses at the action and critical tiers.
  • Support systems — instrument and operational upkeep.

About this model

What a CCP is

A Critical Control Point (CCP) is a point or step in a process where control can be applied and a hazard prevented, eliminated, or reduced to an acceptable level. Each CCP has an objective, monitored parameters, performance criteria (target, action and critical limits), corrective actions and supporting systems.

Model basis

The CCP structure follows the WHO Water Safety Plan framework. In New Zealand the framework sits within a supply's Drinking Water Safety Plan. The DWQAR does not define "critical control point"; its defined term is barrier. This tool maps the DWQAR treatment rules onto the CCP structure, which is where the numeric critical limits and monitoring requirements live.

Performance criteria (three tiers)

The critical limit is the anchor. Suggested target and action limits sit inside it by the margins set in Settings. Parameters can be one-sided (minimum or maximum) or a band with both a low and a high limit (for example pH or an operating FAC band).

UV control approach

Two approaches are supported because they change what the CCP limit is set on:

UVT is monitored continuously in both cases; low UVT under dose-pacing drives higher output rather than an immediate under-dose, and alarms when the reactor can no longer maintain the validated dose.
